Dutee,Srabani, Amiya, Purnima eyeing for Asian Games berth

Bhubaneswar : Ten member of Odisha athletic squad will take part in the 58th National Inter-State Senior Athletic Championships to be held at Sarjusaray Stadium in Guwahati from June 26 to 29. This Championships will serve as final trials for selection and participation of Indian Athletes in the Asian Games to be held at Jakarta (Indonesia) from August 18 to September 2.

This Championships was earlier to be held at Kolkatta from 15 to 18 July 2018 as per AFI competition calendar.

India’s fastest men sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick will participate in men 100, 200 metre race, similarly fastest women sprinter Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda will take part in the 1women 00,200 metre events.

Amiya whose best timing is 10.26 and 21.03 seconds in the 100 and 200 metre events respectively. He will be eyeing to touch the qualifying time of 10.18 and 20.87 seconds in the 100 and 200 metre respectively to conform his berth for the Asian games.

While Dutee’s career best timing was 11.24 and 23.73 seconds in the 100 and 200 metre respectively, the AFI has been set a timing of 11.67 and 23.50 seconds to take part in the forthcoming Asian Games. Similarly, Srabani will also looking forward for the best timing in the meet.

As she was missed the qualifying mark by a whisker at the Jamaica International Invitational Meet on May 19. She clocked 11.70 sec in 100m event, unfortunately she missed the Asian Games qualifying mark of 11.67 sec.

Odia heptathlete Purnima Hemram who bagged bronze medal in the Asian Athletic Championships with 5798 points here at Kalinga Stadium in 2017 , need to touch 5400 points in the national meet to qualify for Jakarta.

Budding women athlete of the State Prangya Prasant Sahu was secured maiden national medal in U-20 women 100 mtr hurdles by clocking 14.60 seconds on April 21 this year. It is not easy but if she clicks 13.39 seconds in the national meet, then she will join the national squad.

Other women athletes of the State Jauna Murmu (400 metre, 400 hurdles), Parbati Sethi (discus) , Divya Shandilya (hammer throw) and, Kuna Marandi (men 800 metre) and Manoj Kumar Maharana (men discuss) are in the State team for the national meet. .
