Rugby World Cup Trophy tour reach Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar : The Webb Ellis Cup the name of the Rugby World Cup has been reached here at Biju Pattnaik Airport on Thursday. The capital city of Odisha is the third and last destination for the trophy tour in India.

The Webb Ellis Cup departed from the World Rugby Hall of Fame in Rugby, England on 1 November 2017, the birthplace of the sport, embarking on its journey to visit five continents and 18 nations, developing rugby nations in the build-up to Japan 2019.

On August 6, the Sports Minister of India, Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, launched the Rugby World Cup 2019 Trophy Tour in India, welcoming the Webb Ellis Cup to Delhi.After that the trophy was moved to Mumbai and from there the trophy arrived here today.

This is the second time Odisha has been added in the world cup trophy tour program of any sports discipline earlier in the year 1987 the cricket world cup trophy came to the State.

The Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik will unveil the trophy at Secretariat on Friday, prier to that the trophy will move to Konark for a photo season in front of Sun Temples.

Bhubaneswar is becoming the first choice for many sports federation because of its international standard infrastructural facility, For which World Rugby federation eager to add the city in the World Cup Trophy tour destination. Also we acclaimed the State Government’s decision to host the Asian Junior Women Rugby Tournament at Kalinga Stadium in this year, said Indian Rugby Football Union General Manager Nasser Hussain.

The Rugby World Cup 2019 Trophy Tour will inspire new audiences and participants through a programme of community, education and rugby activities. Though India will not part of the World Cup as a playing nation but such activities will develop rugby in India, said Asia Rugby Football Union President Aga Hussain. .
