Sharmila bags the opening gold in the National Athletic meet

Bhubaneswar : Sharmila Kumari of the Railway’s is the first women athlete to bag the first gold medal of the 58th National Open Athletics Championships, in the women javelin throw event with a distance of 54.85 metre at Kalinga Stadium here on Tuesday. While the silver and bronze medal was claimed by Annu Rani and Rashmi K by throwing a distance of 52.98 and 50. 16 respectively.

Similarly, Murli Kumar Gavit of Gujarat grabbed the gold medal in the men 10,000 metre by clocking 29:49.79, while Ranjeet Patel of Railway’s and Pradeep Singh of Services grabbed the silver and bronze medals by clocking 29:50;43 and 29:52;3 respectively.

The four-day athletic meet was inaugurated by Sports and Youth Services Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera being organised by Odisha Government’s Sports & Youth Services Department.

After the opening march past Odia heptathlete Purnima Hemram took the oath. The qualifying rounds will be held between 7 am to 10 am every day, medal events will take place from 6 pm to 10 pm in the evening.

Disappointing day for Odia sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick, though he got qualified for the men 100 metre semifinal, but unlucky to enter the final. Among others, Vishal Kumar Dev, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Sports and Youth Services Department secretary Vishal Dev, Director Vineel Krishna and AFI Secretary C K Valson were present.

While welcoming the athletes to Odisha, Behera noted that the state is committed to contribute to the development of sports in the State as well as the country overall. Behera announced that as part of Odisha's investment in the country's sports development, apart from hosting the prestigious Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubneswar 2018 from 28th November to 16th December 2018 the State would soon be setting up a High Performance Sports Academy to produce World Champions in every sport.

The opening ceremony was followed by the finals event of pole vault, javelin throw as well as triple jump in both men's and women's categories, the heats for which had been completed in the morning.

Results: Women’s Triple Jump: Renu Renu (Haryana) 13.63 mtr, M A Siva Anbarasi (Tamil Nadu)13.20, Bhairabi Das (Railways) 12.94. Women’s 10,000: L Surya (Railway) 34:18.62, Meenu (Rajasthan) 34:59,73, Monika Mathur LIC 35:09.83, Men’s Pole Volt: Siva S (Services) 5.10 mtr, J Preeth (Railways) 5.05, Anas Babu (Goa) 4.95 .
