Bhubaneswar : Ahead of the much waiting Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup, the Indian Hockey team is restructuring there new combination in the ongoing National hockey camp at Kalinga Stadium here, in the absent of veteran and former captain Sardar Singh, who had recently announced his retirement.

The 32 years Sardar call it a day after the debacle in the Asian games held at Jakarta, where Indian team bagged the bronze medal.

For me, he will always be a legend of the game, not just in India but in world hockey. There will definitely be a vacuum in his absence, as happens whenever such a big player retires, said Hockey India chief coach Harender Singh.

It is not easy to replace a player of his stature who had a experience of 370 international caps. But we are having players like Manpreet Singh, Kothajit Singh Khadangbam and some of senior players, who will came forward to fill up the vacuum. We are experimenting different combination and tactics on the basis of our past performance in the Champions Trophy, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Test matches and Asian Champions Trophy. It is always the best combination to play in the World Cup, added Harender.

Definitely Sardar’s absence is a truth, but it is also an opportunity to others. There are players in our team to do the job for the team. We are doing our preparation for the upcoming biggest men’s hockey event to be held here from November 28 to December 16. The team will move for the Asian Championships to Oman, where we will face top Asian teams and expecting to defend our titles, said goalkeeper P R Shreejesh.

We spend more then a decade together in Indian team, for me Sardar Paji is like a elder brother to me., he was very tough in the training and very humorous inside the dressing room. The best thing I had realised with him that he always thought about the team. The best replacement of Sardar Singh will be Manpreet Singh, said forward S V Sunil. .
