Jayanti bags bronze in Asian Para Games

Bhubaneswar : Track and field Paralympic athlete from Odisha Jayanti Behera on Tuesday won bronze medal in 200 metre sprint in 2018 Asian Para Games, also known as 3rd Asian Para Games, which is currently taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia.

A native of Sakhigopal in Puri district, Behera secured third spot in the women's 200m T45/46/47 event by clocking 27.45 seconds. The event was especially meant for athletes with limb impairment.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the athlete and announced Rs 10 lakh cash award for bringing laurels for the State. “Odisha is proud of your achievement. Happy to announce Rs10 lakh prize for her,” Naveen tweeted.

Earlier, Behera, whose left hand and waist were burnt in a fire mishap when she was just one-year-old. She had won three gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 400m events in the last two editions of National Para-Athletic Meets and one gold and two silver medals in Asian Youth Para Games-2017 in Dubai.She had also bagged gold in 400-metre event at the World Junior Para Athletic Championships held in Nottwil, Switzerland and another gold medal at the China Open Para Athletic Grand Prix Championship last year. .
