Asian Rugby Under-18 Girls Sevens Championship on Oct 26

Bhubaneswar : The ground has set to host age grade international rugby tournament the Asian Rugby Under-18 Girls Rugby Sevens Championship at Kalinga Stadium here from October 26 to 29.

Meanwhile the Indian teams has been announced and five of Odisha players Sumitra Nayak, Soni Mandangi, Jemamani Naik, Lija Sardar and Parbati Kisku are named among the team.

China, Laos, Philippines, Qatar, India, Sri Lanka, UAE, Bangladesh, Thailand, Hong Kong, Nepal and Chinese Taipei are the 12 teams will participate in the three day meet and in the opening match India will face UAE.

This championship is more compititive than ever, while 12 top Asian teams will fight for the top honour. So many grilling matches, some incredibly good performances from an action packed crop of youngsters are expected. We are glad to host such a recognised championship in the sporting segment, said Sports and Youth Services Department secretary Vishal Dev.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will inaugurate the championship in presence of Indian Football team captain Sunil Chhetri and Asian Games gold medalist Swapana Barman. A cultural programm will be organise to showcase the Odisha dance and culture by Aruna Mohanty, added Vishal.

The social massage of empower women through sports is best example set by Odisha State. The half of the Indian women rugby team is covered by Odisha women rugby players. In the last edition of Asia 7s championship we finished fourth held at Dubai, as a host country we expect our team will produce a better results, said Bollywood star and former rugby player Rahul Bose.

Indian women rugby team is a strong contender for podium finish. Though rugby is body contact sports, but in particular seven’s a side format is more technical need maximum speed and flexibility, said Coach Leudwiche Van Deventer.

In the month long camp along with senior Indian women rugby team here at KIIT University, we assimilate many technic, now its our time to prove our mettle in the ground. We are no3 team in the tournament, but in the past our team outplayed many top rated Asian teams, so we are expecting a podium finish, said vice-captain Sumitra Nayak.

Among others, Indian Rugby Football Union General Manager Nasser Hussain, Odisha Rugby Football Association President MLA Priyadarshi Mishra and Secretary Upendra Kumar Mohanty were present. .
