China wins Asia Rugby U-18 Girls 7s trophy

Bhubaneswar : Top rated China dominated the show to becoming the champion of the three day 3rd Asia Rugby U18 Girls Sevens Championship, defeating Hong Kong 28-5 in the final thanks to tries from Weiyan Wang, Jing Dai and Chenjie Ge (2) at Kalinga Stadium here on Sunday.

Hosts India finished fourth in the tournament after losing to Thailand 25-5, but the event and the host side’s performance gave the capacity crowd a lot to cheer.

Winger Sweety Kumari, one of the standout performers and the top try scorer from the event with fifteen was felicitated by Sports and Youth Services Secretary Vishal Dev.

Meanwhile,Qatar beat the Philippines 15-10 to win the Plate competition, while UAE beat Sri Lanka 22-0 to finish seventh and Laos won all three of their matches in the round robin to lift the Bowl title beating Nepal 30-0, Chinese Taipei 32-0 and Bangladesh 51-0.

This is the result of our hard works, which we started our preparation two years back . Our team displayed tremendous potential with physical strength and metal determination, said Champion team manager Chi Yi Bing.

Today’s final was more a mental game than the physical strength. We were conceded back to back two try in the first-half, which put us in back foot. I am happy with the results as a young team we performed well in front of strong China team, said Hong Kong captain Maelle Picut.

We edged out the host India in the semifinal with our physical power. India always a good competitor and their speed is their strong point. We always expected to meet China in the final. However our young team lost the final match but the players will come back strongly in future, said Hong Kong coach Samantha Feaust.

Odisha Governor Ganesi Lal gave away the champions trophy as the chief guest of the closing ceremony, while former rugby player and Bollywood star Rahul Bose presented the runner up trophy and Sports and Youth Services Secretary Vishal Dev gave the prizes to the third place holder Thailand. .
