Thailand sweeps Asian Petanque titles

Bhubaneswar : Thailand team has been dominated the show become champions winning all the events men’s, women’s singles and doubles events and also the mix-doubles category of the 1st Asian Boules Sport Confederation Petanque Championship, which concluded here at KIIT University here on Sunday, while Cambodia team finished as runner up.

Altogether players from across nine countries were participated in the men’s, women’s singles and doubles events and mix-doubles event in the three-day long championships.

Principal Commissioner of Income Tax Cuttack and Samabalpur Debedra Narayan Kar expressed “ though new sports in India but Petanque is a 100 year old sports discipline. The first World Championships were organized in 1959. The most recent championships were held in Faro (2000), Monaco (2001), Grenoble (2002, 2004 and 2006), Geneva (2003), Brussels (2005), and Pattaya/Thailand (2007). Fifty-two teams from 50 countries participated in 2007.

Kar praised KIIT and KISS founder Achyuta Samanta for providing full support to organize this tournament in a befitting manner. In the first edition our team clinched a bronze medal which is a matter of encouragement for our players, he added.

KIIT and KISS founder and Rajya Sabha MP Achyuta Samanta has been congratulated the participating teams and conveyed his best wishes to Petanque Federation of India for conducting such a mega event for the 1st time in India at KIIT premises.

Final results: Men’s Singles; Thailand Bt Cambodia by 13-8, women’s singles; Thailand Bt Cambodia by 13-11, Mixed-doubles; Thailand Bt Cambodia by 13-10.Women’s doubles; Thailand Bt Cambodia by 13-5, Men’s doubles; Thailand Bt Cambodia by 13-6. .
