Defending champ Australia bag bronze in Hockey World Cup

Bhubaneswar : A hat-trick goal haul by Tom Craig and double strike by Jeremy Hayward guided the defending champion Australia to win the bronze medal of the Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup, defeating England 8-1 at Kalinga Stadium here on Sunday.

Continuously for the third time in a row England finished fourth in the Hockey World Cup, they suffered defeat from Argentina 0-2 to finish fourth in the year 2014 , while they lost to Netherlands by 3-4 in the year 2010, in both the edition Australia was the champion.

Australia was won their last bronze medal in the year 1994 as the host of the World Cup. This is the fifth time Australians were won the bronze medal in the World Cup. Earlier they won bronze medal in the year1978, 1982 and 1990 at Argentina, India and Pakistan respectively.

Earlier in the Pool B league matches Australia edged out England 3-0 in this edition. Today also Australia dominated the bronze medal winning match against England.

After suffering defeat from Netherlands in the semifinal match on Saturday, the Australians were reunited and displayed a better hockey against England.

Blake Grovers opened the account for Australia in the eighth minute and scored his seventh individual ball in the tournament. In the ninth minute Australia double the led through a goal by Tom Craig who received a pass from Tim Brand, his shot was saved by England goalkeeper Harry Gibson ,but on rebound Tom Craig was scored the goal. The first quarter was ended with 2-0 lead for Australia.

The combination between Tom Craig and Jake Harvie was created a open chance for Australia in the 19th minute, Craig made no mistake to get his second goal of the day and the Australian scripted a 3-0 lead. England defence was not found anywhere in the march. The first half ended with 3-0 in favour of Australia.

Tim Brand won a PC for Australia, but it was well saved by Gibson , however the rebound took by Mitton Trent to nail the fourth goal for Australia in the 32 minute. Back to back two field goal by Australians in the 34th minute by Tim Brand and Tom Craig took away the match from England. Tom Craig scored a hat-trick for the team and received the man of the match award.

In the 45th minute Barry Middleton was scored a solitary goal for England. Finally dragflicker Jeremy Hayward was joined the goal shower by nailing back to back two goals in the 57th and 60th minutes with penalty corners conversation to end the match with 8-1 score. .
