Pare Athletes stages dharna for equal rights

Bhubaneswar : The national and international repute para-athletes of the State has been staged dharna here on Wednesday in demanding equal rights for them as like general athletes in the welfare schemes framed by the Sports and Youth Service Department.

More than 50 members of the Odisha Para Players Forum (OPPF) demanded that, The State Government most include them in the direct recruitment scheme for meritorious players. In which the general players are getting the Government jobs according to the medal values.

A four member deligation was meet Sports and Youth Services joint secretary Manoj Kumar Padhy. He assured that the Government will release the pending cash award within 10 days, Padhy also told let the medal winners apply for the job under the direct recruitment scheme first then the department will consider their application, said OPPF joint secretary Sunil Pradhan.

From the year 2012 the State Government has been provided equal rights to all, but in the year 2016 when the new direct recruitment scheme was introduced, in which only general athletes are getting the benefits. The State government is not taking any interest to provide social security to we para athletes, said OPPF secretary Rakhal Sethy. In our state para athletes are performing their best in the badminton, wheelchair fencing, athletics, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, blind chess and visually challenged cricket events. If the Government will extend their support we will bring many more medals for out State, added Rakhal.

It is not easy to get a international medal for para-athletes, we are facing lot of hurdles it begins with our day to day practice, getting proper coaches and equipments, despite of all hinderances we brought many laurels for our nation as well for the State. The State like Haryana, Maharashtra are offering Government jobs to their para-athletes, said OPPF joint secretary Sunil Pradhan. .
