Chennaiyin barges into the Hero Super Cup quarterfinals

Bhubaneswar : Back to back two goals in a span of two minutes by Chennaiyin FC in the first half took away the match from Mumbai FC by 2-0 in the pre-quarterfinal match of the 2nd Edition Hero Super Cup at Kalinga Stadium here on Friday. With the win Chennaiyin is the first team to entered the quarterfinals.

Though Mumbai was ranked high in comparison to Chennaiyin FC as per the Indian Super League (ISL) point table, while Mumbai placed in the third and Chennaiyin was at 10th.

In the last two encounter in ISL, Mumbai scripted double wins, but in absence of regular goalkeeper Amrendra Singh and with only one overseas player Lucian Gooian the Mumbaikars looked off colour here today.

Mumbai forwards Alen Deory and mid fielder TH Bipin Singh made few positive moves but the Chennaiyin defenders never allowed Mumbaikars to dominate them.

A powerful strike by Chennaiyin forward Chekiyot Vineeth from few yards outside the box opened the account for the team in the 42nd minutes.

After one minute of getting the lead by Chennaiyin, a brilliant back pass by midfielder Thoi Singh to well placed Jeje Lalpekhlua who made no mistake to put the ball into the left corner of the Mumbai's goal post in the 43rd minutes.

After the change of sides, desparate Mumbai team reorganised their attack which resulted in to back to back corner kicks in the 48th and 49th minutes, but failed to capitalise that into score.

Chennaiyin FC was added four of its overseas players Netherland mid fielders Gregory Nelson, Australian Christopher Herd, Brazilian defenders Elisabia Filho and Mailson Alves in the playing eleven. .
