Asian Indoor meet: Amiya, Srabani not in the list

Bhubaneswar : Odia women sprinter Dutee Chand named among the 13-member Indian athletic team announced by the selection committee of Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Thursday The team will take part in the 8th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships to be held in Tehran, Iran from February 1-3. Dutee will participate in the women 60 meter event.

CK Valson, Secretary AFI said, “The athletes were selected on the basis of their performances in the International and National Championships including National Junior Championships held in 2017 and confirming their present fitness levels. Two more promising sprinters of Odisha Srabani Nanda and Amiya Kumar Mallicks are not picked up for the meet. While, Srabani is training outside of the country and Amiya is sweeting at his ground at Kalinga Stadium.

Recently, the AFI released a ranking list of Indian athletes, the Amiya Kumar Mallick is ranked one among the Indian Athlete in the 100 metre events. But he has not got the place in the 13-member Indian team.

As the normal practice before all international event, the AFI use to conduct a selection and trail to give fare chances to every athlete to prove their metals. Unfortunately being the fastest man of the country Amiya’s name is not in the list.

While contacted the sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick, “ he said just from the media I came to know that my name is not in the Indian contingent for the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships, also came to know that Muhammed Sadath and Elakkya Dasan will participate in the men’s 60 metre race”.

Many people in our country might not aware that the Odisha has produced many international athletes in particular sprinters. The fastest man and women sprinters of the country belongs to Odisha, recently quoted by Padmashree Pullela Gopichand.

Sources said, when all the State expressed their inability to host the 22nd Asian Athletic Games, our Sate Government came forward and made it possible just in 90 days and saved the prestige of the country. It’s now high time that the State Sports and Youth Services Department must come forward to give justice to our local athletes. .
