Goggle U-13 rugby team gets rousing welcome

Bhubaneswar : The Goggle Sports U-13 rugby team got a rousing welcome here on Monday, as they created a history by winning the two-day Future Hope International Rugby 7-A-Side U-11, U-13,U-15 Tournament held at Howard Stadium in Kolkata on March 4.

Captain Guru Mandra set a example by scoring hattrick tries in the final match against strong KISS team and the team emerged champion in the U-13 boys category with 15-10 score.

Earlier in the semifinal, they win over Siliguri 15-5, Guru, Lashmi Sabar and Sukur Mudal scored a trie each and the team win over Siliguri in the semifinals, however the team edged out Delhi 35-0 in the quarterfinal rounds, Guru scored his first hattrick tries, while Sukur scored double and Gobind Sabar and Lashmi scored a trie each.

Altogether 32 teams were participated in the tournament, in the U-13 section 12 teams were fought for the honour.

In a bid to promote rugby sports among the tribal students of Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, the ace rugby player of the State Surendra Jena was fought tooth and nail for last three years to create a team. This was first international achievement of the team.
