Odisha to host Devis Cup tennis soon

Bhubaneswar : On a move to make Bhubaneswar as the sports capital of India the Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik said after the grand success of Asian Athletic Championship, World Hockey League Final, Indian Super League football now its time for tennis. The State is willing to host Devis Cup tennis at Kalinga Stadium in future.

The CM congratulated the Odisha Tennis Association (OTA) with the hosting of International Tennis Federation Men’s Tour event here at Kalinga Stadium on Monday. OTA has entered into the next level of organising tennis tournament.

The best Indian and overseas players are participating in the event which will give ampule of opportunity to the local players as well as coaches to achieve further excellence.

The State Government is committed to promotion of sports in a big way. In this context Kalinga Stadium has undergone major up-gradation and modernisation. The stadium is having two new athletics synthetic grounds, two new football grounds, two new hockey turfs along with mordan gymnasium with physiotherapy centres. The hockey and athletic stadium capacity has been increased to accommodate more spectators.

On the occasion the CM felicitated national, international participants and the officials who are conducting the international event. To promote young talents of the State, CM handed over cash awards of Rs 50,000 each to Ritupurna Choudhury, Ameek Kiran Bath, Kabir Hans and Abhisek Mohapatra.

Any State tennis association for hosting a international event for the first time, I was noticed that the players and officials were faced any difficulties. But in Odisha it is altogether a different picture, I never felt that the OTA is hosting a international tennis event for the first time, said AITA General Secretary Hiranmoy Chatterjee.

OTA set a new standard for others in regards to hosting big tennis event. We are confident that OTA in association with State Sports and Youth Services Department will be capable enough to host Devis Cup. To host such event, apart from the tennis playing infrastructures the stadium need to setup dedicated dressing room, media centre, wash rooms, medical centre and press briefing rooms for tennis event, added Hiranmoy.

Among others, AITA General Secretary Hiranmoy Chatterjee, OTA President Asit Tripathy, Secretary Madhusudan Padhy, Sports and Youth Services Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev were present. .
