Sanjiban saves quarterfinal place for Jhamshedpur in Super Cup

Bhubaneswar : The Jamshedpur FC’s goalkeeper Sanjiban Singh who made three brilliant save from the spot kick, helped the team to win over I League champion Minerva Punjab by 5-4 goals vie through sudden death in the pre-quarterfinal of the first edition Super Cup at Kalinga Stadium here on Monday. Sanjiban the hero of the match award winner, was replaced their first choice goalkeeper experienced Subrat Pal in this crucial match and his stupendous effort guided the team into the quarterfinals.

Both the goalkeepers were put their extra effort in the regulation time and the match was ended with goalless draw and the referee was called for the penalty kicks to decide the results. Once again the penalty round was ended with 4-4 draw.

The Punjab goalkeeper Kiran Kumar Limbu was deflected the third spot kick of Jamshedpur, which was kicked by mid fielder Emaeson Gomes, while Sanjiban was blocked the kick of Punjab mid-fielder Moinuddin.

In the sudden death round both the custodians were deflected a goal each, but on the seventh attempt JFC’s experienced Mehtab Hussain scored for the team, while Sanjiban was saved the kick of Bali Gagandeep to ensure the victory for JFC.

Sanjiban who made two exemplary save in the 115th and 117th minute to frustrated Punjab’s dependable striker Chencho Gyeltshan. The game began on a slow note with most of the first half being played around the midfield. There were a few attempts to score on either side but either of the teams failed to find the back of the net.

I-League champion Minerva Punjab had a remarkable season. They have a strong, unified unit consisting of hardworkers in their team, the forward Chencho Gyeltshen was surged into the scoring zone, but yet to get the positive results.

Jamshedpur ended fifth in the ISL standings and missed out on a playoff spot in their first ever season. The team was garnered a reputation for being a strong defensive unit. Thay raised upto their reputation to ended the first half 0-0 draw.

After the change of sides, both the teams fought well to open the dead lock but the result remain unchanged the score board read as 0-0 by the end of regulation time.

Punjab was created many chances in the first half, on the beginning of the second half in the Akash Sanwan pushed a free-kick through the gap in the wall towards goal but Sanjiban dive to his right to save the goal.

In the 57th minute Jamshedpur developed a scoring chance, while forward Kervens Belfort rolled the ball to the winger mid-fielder Bikash Jairu, who attempted with his powerful strike which was inches wide of the far post and the match was ended with 0-0 in the stipulated time. .
