Kesabananda Memorial chess begins

Bhubaneswar : Top seeded IM Somak Palit of Railway along with 55 players shared the top place with two points each by the end of second round in the inaugural day of the 7th Kesabananda Das Memorial All India Open FIDE Rating Chess Championship here on Tuesday.

Total 249 players from 12 different states which included 169 Internationally rated and 57 women players are taking part in the five-day nine round tournament.

The championship is featuring a cash award of Rs 5 lakhs to be distributed among 72 winners including 20 merit holders, nine winners each in ELO 1001-1500 rating and ELO 1501-1800 rating categories, informed Khurdha Districts Chess Association (KDCA) secretary Subhasis Pattnaik. The championship was inaugurated by Bhubaneswar BDO Santanu Mohanty in presence of KDCA secretary.

Among others, KDCA treasurer Pradeep Behera, Arbiter Asit Baran Choudhury, Tapas Kumar Mohanty, Fide Arbiter Bhabesh Mohanty, Santosh Mohapatra and G C Mahapatra were present. .
