Somak bags Kesabananda chess title

Bhubaneswar : Top rated Somak Palit of Indian Railway maintained his supremacy to become champion with eight points by the end of ninth round in the 7th Kesabananda Das Memorial All India Open Chess Championship, which concluded here on Saturday.

38th ranked Himansu Moudgil (elo 1715) was caused an upset in the final round by sharing points with fourth seeded Suyog Wagh (elo 2224) and both scored 7.5 points each. While Suyog was bagged the runner up title and Himansu finished fourth. Total 249 players from 12 different states which included 169 Internationally rated and 57 women players were took part in the five-day nine round tournament.

Higher Education Department Secretary G V V Sarma gave away the prizes in presence of Khordha District Chess Association secretary Subhasis Patnaik and All Odisha Chess Association secretary KK Sarma. .
