Prangya joins national squad for South Asian Jr Athletics meet

Bhubaneswar : Odisha's woman hurdler Prangyan Prasanti Sahu is the only athlete from the State named among the national team, to make her international debut in 3rd South Asian Junior Athletics Championships schedule to be held at Colombo, Sri Lanka from May 5.

Prangya from Balasore was secured maiden national silver medal in U-20 women 100 mtr hurdles by clocking 14.60 seconds in the 16th Federation Cup National Junior Athletics Championship held at Coimbatore, Tamilnadu on April 21.

Prangya is the second women hurdler of the State who is going to take part in a international event after Olympian Anurdha Biswal. The 100 metre women hurdles national record is in the name of Biswal with 13.38 seconds.

The AFI selection committee for juniors selected 31 boys and 28 girls for the SAF championships.

Besides India and host Sri Lanka, the other SAF nations participating in the two-day championship are Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal.

Sanjay Garnaik, Chief coach (juniors) who is the native of Angul districts said, “SAF will serve as a good competitive event for juniors ahead of the Asian Junior Championships to be held in Japan in June. It will provide good exposure to those athletes who have never participated in an international event.” .
