Elite athletes to skip National Athletics Championships

Bhubaneswar : The last-minute withdraw of elite athletes, including Odisha’s ace sprinter Dutee Chand and Asian Games gold medalist middle distance runner Jinson Johnson, has going to disappoint the the locals in the 58th National Open Athletics Championships beginning here at Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday.

As the year ender event scheduled just after the Asian Games, the event first witnessed the unavailability of well-known athletes, such as javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, sprinting sensation Hima Das, discus thrower Seema Punia, the entire team of 400m women's relay team and many more.

Japan’s three women sprinter HitomiShimura (100 mtr hurdles) ,SayukaAoki (400 mtr hurdles) and Takeishi Konomi (400 mtr ), who were keen to take part in the meet , also withdraw their names as one of them fell ill.

With the meet drawing closer, more Asian Games medallists decided to skip the event. While Johnson will be in Delhi to receive the Arjuna award on Wednesday, Mohammad Anas is said to have met with a minor accident.

However, at least four Asiad medal winning athletes, including triple jump gold-medallist Arpinder Singh, women's long jump silver-medallist Neena V., 1500m bronze winner P. U. Chitra and 400m silver-winning 400m hurdler A. Dharun, will be seen in action.

The State hosted the Asian Athletics Championships here in 2017. This time the national meet will be the perfect platform for those, who want to get selected for the national camp ahead of the Asian championships in April in 2019. .
