Hockey World Cup venue to be disability friendly stadium

Bhubaneswar : The Odisha Government is aware of the challenges the physically-challenged face to access stadiums in different parts of the country. While hosting Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup here from November 28 to December 16, the government has take care of each and every possible steps to make Kalinga Stadium is a disability friendly stadium.

The sitting capacity of this world class stadium is being doubled from 7000 to almost 15000 now. Along with the expansion of existing gallery infrastructure, two new stands and pavilions have also been constructed in the stadium. It was earlier decided that during renovations of the stadium, we should look at putting up structures that will help the physically-challenged to access easily the stadium.

Sports and Youth Services Director Vineel Krishna said that the soon-to-be-opened Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar has such facilities. The newly constructed north gallery’s basement has been marked for the physically-challenged sports lovers. The East stands also have special entrances for the physically-challenged and also added with lifts facility.

For the convenience of the mobility of the spectators, numerous entry gates have been built. Internal and external roads leading to the said entry gates have also been widened to facilitate an easy commute.

To avoid traffic issues and give safe passage to the spectators the State government added two new foot over bridge (FOB) near to the stadium entrance. While one FOB has been designed with steps to cross pass the busy road and another one to be installed with ramps which will be easier for the senior citizens and wheelchair spectators to asses the stadium, added Vineel. .
