CM inaugurates Hockey World Cup venue Kalinga Stadium

Bhubaneswar : Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday inaugurated the renovated Kalinga Stadium the venue for the 14th Edition Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup schedule to be held from November 28 to December 16.

With a bid to provide best of the sports infrastructure the Odisha government remodelled Kalinga Stadium into an international sports complex. The both practice and main ground of the hockey complex have been re-laid with new blue turf as per FIH specification. The stadium capacity has also been increased from 7500 to 15000 adding two new galleries in the north and south ends.

I am delighted to inaugurate the renovated Kalinga Stadium which will host the biggest hockey event in the coming month. Now the seating capacity has been increased to accommodate 15,000 guests. The I congratulate the senior players who were took part in the exhibition match, also thanked them as they played the match in a adverse weather condition, said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

As a part of inaugural ceremony, an exhibition hockey match was held between Dilip Tirkey XI against Dhanraj Pillay XI. The local fevorite Dilip’s team edged out Dhanraj XI by 2-1 goals. Deepak Thakur scored both the goals for the winning team, while Gurjant Singh netted the solitary goal for Dhanraj XI.

After 2004 for the first time I played hockey here at Kalinga Stadium. I am expressing my heartful of thanks to the Odisha Government and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who gave a new dimension to Indian hockey by sponsoring the national team for coming five years. The preparation of Hockey World Cup is in full swing I am expecting Bhubaneswar will set a new bench mark for hockey, said former Indian Hockey team captain Dhanraj.

It is a matter of pride for me and as well as for my State as we are going to host biggest men’s hockey event in November. The State Government and the Sports Department put all their effort to make a grand success, said former MP Dilip Tirkey. .
