Odisha XI win friendly series inaugural

Bhubaneswar : Double strike by Silananda Lakra guided the host team Odisha XI to dominate the show from the first half and registered a convincing 5-1 victory in the opening match of the Odisha -New South Wales Friendly Series at Kalinga Stadium on Thursday.

Silananda who recently included in the senior men campers list for the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup, opened the account for the host team in the second minutes of first quarter. However Jack Pickering scored the equaliser in the ninth minute.

Just before the end of the first-half Silananda scored another goal in the 15th minutes and captain Amit Rohidas netted a goal in the second quarter and the first half score board read as 3-1 in favour of Odisha.

After the change of sides, sprited Odisha added one more goal through Manip Kerketa to script a 4-1 lead in the 35th minute. Prasanna Tirkey the elder brother of defender Dipsan Tirkey scored the fifth goal for Odisha in the 44th minute.

In the final quarter, both the fought well but the score remain unchanged and Odisha XI scripted a 5-1 victory. Amit Rohidas of the winning team adjudged as the man of the match.

For the first ever international match held at renovated Kalinga Stadium. As like ever match here the spectators cheered for both the teams. Though it was a friendly series but the sizable audience created a electrifying atmosphere.

To built of the promotional campaign for the biggest Hockey event of the year Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup which begins on November 28, the Odisha Government has been organised the two match friendly series. The second one will be played at Rourkela on November 4. .
