Odisha thrash Assam in Ranji Trophy

Bhubaneswar : Young simmer proved his mettle in his debut match by scaling a total of 11 wickets and powered the Odisha team to script their victory in the third day of their four day Ranji Trophy Elite Group-C match, defeating host Assam by nine wickets at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Thursday.

After taking a first-innings lead of 119 runs, Odisha reduced hosts Assam to 60 for four in the second innings at stumps on the second day. Rajesh Mohanty scalped six wickets in the second innings to bowl the home team out for 132 in 50 overs.

Odisha chased down the total by losing the wicket of Anurag Sarangi to Mukhtar Hussain and hence lost the bonus point. Odisha secured six points in total from this away game against Assam. Young pace bowler Rajesh Mohanty, who bagged his maiden five-wicket haul in the first innings was the star performer for Odisha in the game as he ended up with 11 wickets in the match and that was his first 10-wicket haul in a first-class game.

Earlier in reply to Assam’s 121 first inning score, Odisha were all out for 240 . Among Odisha batsmen, Anurag Sarangi (77 off 124b, 16x4) and captain Biplab Samantaray (61 off 189b, 9x4) hit a half-century each, while wicket-keeper Sujit Lenka contributed a useful 28.Ranjeet Mali was most successful Assam bowler with a haul of six wickets for 80 runs, while Mukhtar Hussain scalped three for 75. Brief Score: Assam 121/10 in 51.1 overs (Rajesh Mohanty 5/31) and 132/10 in 50 over lost to Odisha 240/10 in 85.2 overs (Anurag Sarangi 77; Ranjit Mali 6/80) and 16/1 won the match by 9 wickets. .
