World champions to be felicitated on Hockey World Cup opening ceremony

Bhubaneswar : The 1975 Hockey World Cup gold medal winning Indian team got a rousing welcome here at Biju Patnaik International Airport here on Monday. The team lead by Ajit Pal Singh was received by sports and Youth Services Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera. The State Government will felicitate the gold winning team members on the occasion of Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup opening ceremony at Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday.

Ajit Pal Singh captained and led the team to victory during the 1975 World Cup. He even has to his credit of representing the prestigious tournament on three occasions where he represented the team for 1971 World Cup, Barcelona wherein the team bagged the Bronze and in 1973 World Cup, Amsterdam where they bought back the Silver. He even was part of two Olympics Games in Mexico 1968 (Bronze) and 1972 (Bronze).

I am extremely happy that the way Odisha Government is hosting the World Cup, Their gesture to felicitate us reminds me the day when we won the title for the country. Present team is a young team will put a better show at Kalinga Stadium, said Ajit Pal Singh.

Ashok Kumar, son of legendary Late Major Dhyan Chand is the first of two Indians who represented India for four World Cup tournaments which included Barcelona 1971 (Bronze), 1973 Amsterdam (Silver), Kuala Lumpur 1975 (Gold) and Buenos Aires 1978. He was also instrumental in scoring the winning goal for India against Pakistan in the finale of the 1975 World Cup.

It was always the expectation is high on me as the son of Major Dhyan Chand, that motivated me to play responsibly through out my career. I thanks the Chief Minister of Odisha who called the champion team, expressed Ashok Kumar.

One incident that stands out in his memory is,when he showed the gold medal to his father.

"As I entered the house, my father was standing at the entrance. He saw my medal and patted my back. That was the first time I ever showed a medal to him, as that was first gold in such a big competition."

"I will cherish that World Cup victory forever, I wish the Indian team to be called as World champion again" he added. .
