India eyeing for winning start in Hockey world Cup
Sportslogon Team November 27th 2018

Bhubaneswar : The opening match is more important for us , we want to make a winning start in the Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup on Wednesday, said Indian Chief Coach Harendra Singh in the pre match conference here at Kalinga Stadium on Tuesday.

Winning the first match releases 40 to 50% of pressure. We want grab full points against South Africa in first match tomorrow. But for points, we can't forget or sacrifice the basics of hockey, the strategy.

I expect SA strikers will try to break us. But we have strategies in place. We won't compromise on playing attacking hockey against any team. We want to think ahead of the opponents. Put your best foot forward. it brings you new energy.

Hard fact is all of us have forgotten AG defeat and you should also forget. We learn from history, gain experience but there is no point recalling it. We took collective responsibilty. NWe don't even talk about it now in our meetings.

This is not a young team having lots of experience and I am confident it is team that can create history. You have to have patience. Selectors have considered you good enough to wear India colours, be proud of it. Every player in the team understands it. Advise to stick to basics and strategy. Consider crowd as 12th man and use their energy.

Did anyone think Ireland will reach women's WC final and Croatia make it to FIFA WC final. Every team works on their strategy. It's about that particular day. We want to top the pool and play in crossovers. You get an extra day then and know who you will play.

Penalty Corner is a combination of three ehings. Injector, stopper and drag-flicker. Our conversation rate is very good, we are confident of achieving 24% to 38%.

It's a very unique Pool, Pool C. All four teams are different, which is not the case in other pools. We have teams from American (CAN), African (SA), European (BEL) and Asian continent (IND). In every match, we have to play different kind of hockey. We have done our homework.

We always discuss India concede last minute to lose. But I don't think so it has happened in the last 4-5 years, except Asian Games 2018. But that doesn't only happen with Indian team. I can give you history where other teams also have lost the same way.

Sometimes you take the wrong decision even if life, while you think it is the right decision. As long as you keep the ball, opponents can't score. That's a lesson we have learnt, added Harendra.

We are not focussing on crossovers. If we top the pool, so we should not worry about it. We are focusing on our first match. We have improved over the last 3-4 years, never won FIH medals. Won HWL bronze, then CT silver. Now it's the WC. So have to show that we have improved at the highest level, said Indian Captain Manpreet Singh.

After AG, all of us were disappointed to concede in last minute. We have worked on that a lot, also in team meetings. It will be better to keep the ball in opponent's half. .
