Hockey Men World Cup Belgium Bt Canada

Bhubaneswar : Olympic silver medallist and world no 3 Belgium started their campaign with a winning note by defeating Canada by 2-1 in the inaugural match of the Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup at Kalinga Stadium here on Wednesday.

The Red Lions was dominated the show from the beginning of the first quarter itself, Felix Denayar opened the account for Belgium in the third minutes of the play. From out side of the D area Van Doren Arthur pushed the ball into the scoring zone and slight deflection by Felix to put the ball in the net. Lodged in Pool C, which offers variety, the Red Lions are backed by a top-class domestic system and the resources to achieve their target of securing their best-ever finish. The highest ranked team in the pool and a contender for the champion’s tag, Belgium’s previous best performance was in fifth place.

Captain Thomas Briels seemed to had put Belgium 2-0 up innthe 12th mutes. But the cross from the right wing came off the back of the stick and third umpire disallows the goal.

It was not easy to denied to the Belgium captain Briels twice. The captain latched on to a pass from Arthur Van Doren from outside the circle and shoots past Canada goalkeeper Antonia Kindler to double the lead in the 22 minutes.

The Belgium rewarded with two back-to-back penalty corners, but Alexander Hendrickx's drag flicks were kept out by Kindler, who has been the only bright spot for Canada in this game. Kindler also saved the fist Belgium PC in the 20th minute. Canada awarded with two back to back PC in 47th and 48th the minutes. Parson Mark created a hope for the team to level the score by converting a PC in the 48th minute.

Altogether Belgium awarded with total seven PC that shows the attacking style of Red Lion's, but failed to convert into goals. .
