Hockey Men World Cup Host India Bt South Africa

Bhubaneswar : Host India played like a fighter by dominating from the first quarter of their inaugural match against South Africa by scripting a convincing 5-0 win in the Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup at Kalinga Stadium here on Wednesday.

Simranjeet Singh was the star of the match by scoring double goals and adjudged as man of the match, with the win India gain three points. The first quarter was full of action, every minute was cheered by houseful spectators. India awarded with a Penalty Corner (PC), Harmanpreet Singh's drag flick was saved by the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper Pieterse Rassie, but Mandeep Singh took the adventage of the situation as he was standing infront of the box and put it home.

Akashdeep Singh added flavour to Indian camp by scoring a goal in the 12th minute. He received a long pass from Varun Kumar and controled the ball, and finished on the run from a tough angle. In the second quarter India kept their pressure intact and got a PC in the 19th minute ,but saved by Saith African goalkeeper. The score board read as 2-0 by the end of second quarter.

Indian speed and skills in the third quarter took away the match from the visitors as they mailed two more goals in this quarter. Mandeep goes on a blazing run on the right flank to get to the line and cut back to Simranjeet who made no mistake to gave his team a 3-0 led in the 43rd minute , just before the end of the third quarter Lalit Upadhyay deflected the ball received from Akashdeep and put into the box in the 45th minute.

In the first minute of the last quarter India awarded with PC, once again Samranjeet scored another goal on the rebound from SA goalkeeper Rassie. India awarded with five PC , while South Africa got two PC. Both the teams couldn't able to convert their PC into goals, but in two chances India scored a goal each on the rebound from visitors goalkeeper. Indian Men's Hockey team's opening match of the World Cup saw Vice-Captain Chinglensana Singh Kangujam achieve the milestone of completing 200 International Caps for the country. Last time both India and South Africa met in the World Cup at Delhi , the match was a draw. .
