Australia starts campaign with win in World Cup Hockey

Bhubaneswar : Defending champion Australia started their with a winning note by defeating Ireland by 2-1 in the Pool-B league round match of the Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup at Kalinga Stadium here on Friday.

Ireland is participating in the World Cup after 18 years in their last appearance was in the 7th edition at Pakistan in the year 1990 at where they finished 12th.

In other hand Australia who had nine medals in their bags which included three gold, two silver and four bronze medals. Defending champion Australia are in a move to grab their hat-trick gold in the Hockey World Cup here.

Last time they meet each other in the 2017 Sultan Azlan Shana Tournament , Australia got the better of Ireland 4-1.

Australia started their attacking game from the first minutes and awarded with back to back PC for Australia in the 11th minute , Blake Govers put it into the top corner of the net with his powerful strike to gave World No 1 team to open their account early.

The led of Australi was not stay for long time, in the 13th minute Ireland equalised the score through a field goal by O'Donoghue Shane , he received the pass from Murray Sean.

The first PC was rewarded in favour of Ireland in the 20th minute and was saved by Andrew Charter.

In the second quarter Australia awarded with back to back PC, but Ireland skipper Harte David stood rock solid in the post to demoralise the Australia attack. The first half ended with 1-1.

20- year Brand Tim ran down the flank took the pass from Blake Govers and strike the and it was the sliding save by Ireland goalkeeper David Harte , but the rebound once again collected by Tim and scored a goal in 34th minute for Australia in his 13th match and adjudged as man of the player. .
