Goa, Delhi enter Super Cup quarter-finals

Bhubaneswar : The dominating FC Goa barged into the quarterfinals of the 2nd Edition of Hero Super Cup, defeating Indian Arrows by 3-0 here at Kalinga Stadium on Saturday. In first edition FC Goa had reached the semifinals.

FC Goa have had a brilliant Indian Super League (ISL) season. After playing consistently well throughout the year they lost out to Bengaluru FC in the final via a 117th-minute Rahul Bheke strike. Indian Arrows, on the other hand, had put up a valiant fight against Mumbai City FC in the qualifying round but ultimately lost 2-1.

The Goa maintained their aggressive style from the beginning of the match, the combination of Spain forward Ferran Corominas and Morocco midfielder Zaidkrouch created scoring opportunities for the team.

Krouch's power packed shot was handled by Indian Arrows defender Sanjeev Stalin inside the box , resulted in a penalty kick for FC Goa. Corominas opened the account for Goa in the 18th minute through the spot kick and the first half ended with a 1-0 lead for Goa.

After the change of sides, the young Arrows gone all-out to level the score. Arrows midfielder Meetei was snatched the ball away from Goa's midfielder Hugo Boumous at the edge of the box and took a shot at goal from a close range but Nawaz pulls off a brilliant save to deny him from scoring. It was the easiest chance of the match for Arrows so far in the 50th minute.

In a one to one encounter Hugo Boumous was crossed pass Arrows goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill and scored the second goal for FC Goa. Brandon Fernandes corner kick was misread by Tangri as the ball struck his shin before creeping into the net. In the end, Goa comfortably sealed the victory and thus sealed their spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

In another match of the day, Quess East Bengal failed to turn up for their Hero Super Cup Round of 16 match against Delhi Dynamos FC. As Quess East Bengal did not report till the scheduled kick-off time, the match could not kick-off. Consequently, Delhi Dynamos FC progress to the quarterfinals. .
