Hat-trick of Pedro guides Chennai into Super Cup quarter-finals

Bhubaneswar : Hat-trick strike by skipper Pedro Javier guided I League champion team Chennai City FC into the quarterfinals of the second edition Hero Super Cup, defeating Pune City by 4-2 goals at Kalinga Stadium here on Sunday. Pedro scored the first hat-trick of the tournament and adjudged as the hero of the match.

Chennai City FC's biggest strength is there attacking trio of Sandro R, Pedro Javier M and Nestor Jesus G. The Spaines combination seems to be more devastating from the beginning of the match.

Chennai was initiated a brilliant counter attack as Regin finds Nestor on the left flank. The Spaniard initially failed to trap the ball properly but later controls it and gone past two defender before taking a shot at goal but Pune City FC goalkeeper Kamaljit saved it.

In 28th minute Pune midfielder Marcello Pereira was received a long pass from Iain Edward Hume from the centre of the ground , though he was crossed passed the I League champion Chennai's defence lined up but failed to open the account for Pune missed a golden scoring chances.

Chennai City skipper Pedro Manzi who was the highest goal scorer in the I League with 21 goals, opened the account for the team in the 35th minute. Nestor who sent a through ball for Ameeruddin on the right who put it inside the box and Pedro slots it home.

Again the Spanish duo put Chennai in the 2-0 lead in the 40th minute. Nestor's through pass was received by Pedro made no mistake to found the back of the net with a clinical finish.

Chennai defender Gourav Bora's made a blunder while clearing the ball, Brazilian striker Marcelo Pereira was entered the box to score a goal in the 43rd minute.

After the change of sides, in the 49th minute referee was booked Chennai midfielder Charles Anandraj for the second time tonight due to his rough tackle to Pune forward Edward Hume and sent Charles out of the ground.

Playing with ten players, desparate Chennai defender Bora was pushed Pereira inside the D area, which was resulted in a spot kick and Pune leveled the score 2-2 through the penalty stroke by Marko Stankovic in the 50th minute.

The brave heart Chennai won a penalty kick in the 61st minute, as Pune defender Adil Khan's foul to Tarikh Akhand. Star of the match Pedro completed his hat-trick from the spot kick and Chennai restored their lead 3-2. Sandro Rodriguez made it 4-2 in favour of Chennai City. Pedro initiated the move from a counter attack and his Spanish counter part Sandro took the match away from Pune City FC.

In the quarterfinal match on April 4, the I League champion Chennai City FC will face ISL champion Bengaluru FC . .
