Pratap bags best defender award in Asian meet

Bhubaneswar : Hockey Gangpur Odisha’s defender Paratp Lakra netted double goals in the final match against Malaysia and team India emerged champion of the 5th Asian School Boys U-18 Hockey Championship, by scripting a 5-1 win at at Aishbagh Hockey Stadium in Bhopal on Tuesday. Vice-captain Pratap adjudged as the best defender of the meet.
Alishan Mohammad continued to have a good outing in the championship as he gave India an early lead with a stunning field goal in the 12th minute. India's next two goals came in the 20th and 23rd minute when Pratap Lakra successfully converted a penalty corner and a penalty stroke respectively. This took India's lead to an impressive 3-0.
Though Malaysia scored a field goal through Akhimullah Anuar Esook M in the 32nd minute, India school's Alishan Mohammad scored his second goal of the match in the 34th minute and earned his team a comfortable 4-1 lead at half-time.
Maninder Singh scored in the 38th minute while the team's defenders did well to keep Malaysia from scoring another goal to end the match with a stunning 5-1 victory and enthral the home crowd. Malaysia had to settle for a second place finish.
Malaysia, China, Sri Lanka and UAE were placed in the Group-A. Similarly, host India placed in the group-B along with Singapore, Thailand and Nepal.
In the league round matches, India edged out Nepal,Singapore and Thailand by 24-0, 13-1 and 17-1 goals respectively. In the semifinals, India pipped Chain by 11-0 goals.
Hockey Gangpur Odisha secretary Debasish Gouda was congratulated three of their players Pratap Lakra, Manip Kerketa and Akash Ekka for their valuable contribution in the Asian meet.
