Bengal, Churchill draw in Federation Cup
Sportslogon Team May 7th 2017

Bhubaneswar : Hot and humidity condition affected the inaugural match, East Bengal and Churchill Brothers Sports Club were forced to play a slow game and the match ended in 1-1 goal draw in the Federation Cup 2017 at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday.

East Bengal created few opportunities in the first half, but could not manage to convert it into goals However, Trinidad Tobago striker Anthony Anton Wolfe was clearly missed a one to one encounter with East Bengal custodian Subhasish Roy Chowdhury in the 19th minute and the score card read as 0-0.

After the change of sides, both the team slow down the matches, Wedson Anselme has broken the deadlock for the East Bengal side. The Haiti international makes a mockery of Churchill Brothers' back line as Anselme's physique gets the better of the three defenders. Naveen Kumar has no answer to the striker's attempt either. Bengal scripted a 1-0 in their favour.

In the 81st minute, local boy Pankaj Sona sends in a cross from the left which is lost between the players inside the box but a clever Brandon Fernandes slides in to send the delivery to Ansumana Kromah who is in the perfect position. Kromah makes no mistake to slot the delivery home as the Red Machines put up the equalising goal in the last set of minutes of the game.

First match of any tournament is very important one, seeing the condition here I am happy with 1-1 draw. East Bengal is a strong team, our players were go all out to stop them, we missed few better chances in the match. As it was the beginning of the tournament, we are hopeful we will put better show as it progress, said Churchill coach Derrick Pereira.

Climate was not conducive for better football but it was same for both the teams, for us injury was the matter of concern. Today our players were created 12 opportunities and several time entered the D area of the opponent. We need little bit extra effort to convert few half-chances into score. Two matches are ahead our team will grow further, said East Bengal team manager .
