Robin’s double helps Bengal to beat Chennai in Federation cup

Bhubaneswar : Robin Singh, who had a great game of football here, including a brace to his name helped East Bengal to win over Chennai Fc in the Federation Cup at Batadium in Cuttack on Tuesday.

With the win Kolkata outfit gathered total four points in its kitty whereas the Southerners are yet to open their points tally.

Birthday boy Robin Singh proved to be lucky for the East Bengal by scoring the well deserved opening goal for the team in the 45th minute. Bengal took the advantage of the silly error in the back line. Dharmaraj Ravanan was too careless with his clearance as Willis Plaza stormed into him and the defender lost the ball.

Chennai goalkeeper Karanjit Singh move ahead to stop the lethal onrushing Trinidadian but he passed the ball to Robin Singh who was free and has space available to him. Birthday boy made no mistake in shooting the ball home.

The birthday boy once again rock the podium by scoring another goal in the 76th minute. The excitement began when Cavin Lobo stood for a free-kick and as his ball reached the box, while Ravanan's hand got in the way of the delivery and the Chennai skipper was booked for the handball incident. No doubt penalty was awarded to Bengal and striker Robin got the better of Karanjit Singh again as the Kolkata outfit shield the match 2-0.

Chennai City who suffered back to back defeat out of three league matches, while they lost to I-League champions Aizawl FC on Sunday. After taking a healthy 2-0 lead in the first half, they witnessed a terrific comeback by the Northeast side in the second half that resulted in a 3-2 defeat. The Chennai’s journey in the tournament is almost ended.

Just before the match we were in little bit pressure, as it was like a do or die match for us. We need three points to go further in the next round. We need to improve our midfielder as we are going to face Aizawl FC in our next match, said East Bengal assistant coach Ranjan Choudhury.

As a striker I love to score goals, when you are right in the target and the result came in favour of your team, what gives lot of satisfaction. The more you score in the tournament, you confidence level will enhance further, said Robin Singh. .
