Mohan Bagan virtually enter Federation cup semis

Bhubaneswar : Despite conceding self goal in the third minute of the match, highly motivated defending champion Mohan Bagan virtually barged into the semifinals by registering back to back wins in the league round matches of the Federation Cup at Cuttack on Wednesday.

Mohan Bagan edged out Meghalaya-based Shillong Lajong FC 3-2 goals today, earlier they had pipped DSK Shivajians in their inaugural match by 4-0. With double win Mohan bagan gathered six points and conformed a place in the last four list. While suffering two consecutive defeat, Shillong’s door was closed for the further round.

Shillong midfeilder Riupert Nongrum lofted the ball into the box from range towards Fabio Pena, but unfortunately Pritam Kotal’s foot came on the way and the ball gone straight into the net, Shillong got the led in the third minute of the game.

Mohan Bagan striker Darryl Duffy scored the equaliser for the team in the fifth minute. Duffy made a run to force Shillong goalkeeper Kaith to came out of the box and a novice mistake by Kaith in a failed attempt to clear the ball , Duffy slowly guided it in with a left-footer.

A brilliant free kick from 23 yards by Sony Norde gave no opportunity to Vishal Kaith and slammed it into the top right corner. With the much waited led in the 27th minute rejuvenated the Mohan Bagans. Skipper Katsumi Yusa was cleverly glided the ball into the box in the 43rd minutes, the score card reached 3-1 in the first half.

Yuta Kinowaki reduced the lead by scoring a goal for Shillong in the 80th minute. Alen Deory had all the space to go for glory himself but he was clever passed the ball back to Kinowaki and he thrash it straight with Debjit blinded by the presence of his defenders.

Our target was to win both the league matches before we will play our final match. It is always better to have full six points in the kitty. We could have won the match with bigger margin, despite the self goal in the beginning, our players bounced back strongly, said assistant coach Ranjan Choudhary. .
