Bengal draw with Aizawl, qualify for Federation Cup semis

Bhubaneswar : Testing of nurves between East Bangal’s forwards and baseline players of Aizawl FC ended in goalless draw in the group-A league match, both teams qualify for the semifinals of the Federation C up at Barabati Stadium on Thursday.

I-League champion Aizawl picked up two victories and a draw to completed their league rounds. Aizawl with a 3-2 comeback win against Chennai, a last minute victory over Churchil s Brothers and goalless draw with East Bengal, allowing them to sit at the top of Group A with seven points.

The East Bengal meanwhile have recovered from a stuttering start. They were held to a 1-1 draw by Churchill in the first game but soon responded with a 2-0 win over struggling Chennai City. With the draw in the final league match today They are second with five points.

It was a busy outing for Aizawal goalkeeper Lalawmpuia who sabotage many attack from East Bengal star’s like Wills Deon Plaze, Md Rafiqe and Cavin Peter Lobo.

Midfielder Bikash Jairu and striker Wills Deon Plaza created a brilliant move in the 69th minute, it was only to beat Aizawl goalkeeper Lalawmpuia but Plaza send it wide.

Ball after ball plumped in by East Bengal and the Aizawal defence was stood rock solid. Defeander Lalhriat Renga in a space of a minute was made a goalline clearance in the 84th minute and failed East Bengal’s attack.

East Bengal gone all out to score before the final whistle, the combined attack by mid-fielder Bikash Jairu and both forward Robin Singh and Wills Deon Plaza were inside the Aizawl box to sniff out a goal but on the counter, Willam Lalnufela novicely shoots it wide. .
