Semifinalists spotted in Federation Cup

Bhubaneswar : Defending champion Mohun Bagan and I-league champion Aizawl become group B and group-A table topper with seven points each will face East Bengal and Bangaluru FC respectively in the semifinals of the Federation Cup at Barabati Stadium on May 14.

In the last group-B league match, between Mohun Bagan and Bangaluru FC ended in 1-1 goal draw. Though both the teams are qualified for the semifinals, most unfortunate incident happened for Bangaluru their skipper Sunil Chhetri may miss the semifinal and final matches due to injury.

Bangaluru midfielder Alwyn George beat defender Subhasish Bose and barged into the box by changing his side, slammed into the net, Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Debjit Majumdar must have done much better than his quick dive which went in vain. Bangaluru got 1-0 lead in the early 11th minute.

It was always proved to be fatal, when Mohun Bagan midfielder Sony Norde was allowed a gap and he received a golden pass from his co-midfielder Kean Lewis from the flank, Norde’s powerful lef footer from 21 yards found the far corner of the net past a hapless Amrinder Singh the Bangaluru goalkeeper in the 50th minute equaliser.

Right after the equaliser scored by Mohun Bagan, the skipper took a tumble and he raised his hand up signalling his desire to come off the ground in the 53rd minute.Sunil who was suffering from hamstring, informed by Bangaluru coach Alberto Roca.

We want to win the match, never want to loss a match before entering the semifinal rounds. We tried our few players in the last league match, they also put a nice football. We are happy with the results. We look forward to our semifinal match, said Mohun Baganh coach Sanjay Sen. .
