Bhubaneswar : The academy aims to nurture and train badminton sporting talents from Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand and all over North East States as well as Andaman and Nicober Island to compete at national and international levels, said Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik while officially inaugurating the Regional Badminton Academy at Saheed Nagr here on Sunday.

The State Sports and Youth Affairs department in joint collaboration with Sports Authority of India (SAI) has been set-up the academy in eastern region. Chielf Minister also lay down the foundation stone for the hostel.

Never it is a small of big academy, in the year 2004 we started the Hyderabad academy with 25 players only. While nine-year old PV Sandhu was the youngest and 16-year old Parupalli Kashyap was the eldest. The academy is continuously producing international medalists for the country.

Winning a medal is not a only parametre to judge a player. It is a side product of hard work. Each and every player is a champion, even if he do not win any medals. He is a champ of fitness and health, which I could understand after so many years.

In our country we saw a phenomenal growth in literacy, but we are gone down in physical literacy. By virtue of that the Indian heath condition is detorting day by day. We most create a environment for sports so that each individual can actively take part in sports. Otherwise we will set up more hospital centre in our country.

I am having close attachment for the State of Odisha. In my childhood I was spent four years (1974-1978) in the city of Rayagarh, when my father was a employee there.

We express our thanks to State Government for their initiative to start the regional badminton academy. We had a partnership with Yonex the world’s one of the best company, who will provide kit and equipment worth of Rs 53 lakhs per year for coming five years. The SAI will appoint three coaches for the centre, said SAI executive director Roque Dias.

Presently 24 residential inmates have been selected from all over eastern region including 11 from Odisha to be trained in the academy. We will spend Rs 1.37 crores for the construction of hostel and gymnasium. The Saheed Nagar Indoor Hall will be air-condition soon with another added coast of Rs 98 lakhs. This is a great chance for our state players to make best use of the facilities, said Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera.

Among others MP Prasana Kumar Patasani, MLA Priyadarshi Mishra, Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena, development commissioner P Balkrishna, Sports and Youth Affairs secretary Visal Dev and Director Vineel Krishna were present. .
