Daily wages labour’s daughter Jayanti selected for World meet

Bhubaneswar : Strong willpower and determination of sprinter Jayanti Behera, who is a daughter of a daily wages labour created history by qualifying for the World Para Athletic Meet schedule to be held at London in the month of July.

She was the only women sprinter of our country got selected in the 400 metre race to participate in the World meet by winning a gold medal with a timing of 1.02 seconds in the China Open para Athletic Grand Prix Championship held on May 14.She also got a silver medal in the 200 metre race by clocking 28.50 seconds.

Jayanti is the youngest daughter of Kunja Behera and Ashamani Behera of Manitilasahi village in Sakhigopal in Puri district.

I am having four elder sisters and a brother in my home. I am pretty aware that my family could not give me any financial support but their encouragement and coach Bishnu Prasad Mishra helped me a lot to reach such height of pinnacle, said Jayanti.

“I never have the feeling that I am a differently able athlete. In my State I had participated in the under-20 and Under-18 sprinting event of the State athletic meet at Cuttack in the year 2013 , 2014 and 2015. Also grabbed gold medals in my respective age category with competing among the general athletes, said Jayanti.

My left hand was burnt when I was only one year. I am happy whatever I got from the almighty. I got my passion for sports from my Sri Ram Chandrapur High School in Sakhigopal. Last seven years I am staying at Gurukul Athletic Training which is running by my coach Bishnu Sir, Jayanti added.

Constantly and continuously Jayanti was dominating the national meet in sprinting event. She won three golds medals in the 200, 400 and 800 metre in the National meet at Haryana in the 2016 and got the best women athlete of the year. After that her performance was repeated in the 2017 national meet by claiming three gold medals in the 100, 200 and 400 metre events at Rajasthan, also gained the best women athlete of the year, said her coach Bishnu Prasad Mishra. .
