Samarendra bags bronze in Commonwealth Powerlifting

Bhubaneswar : Samarendra Routray added another feather in his cap by winning over-all bronze medal in the 7th Commonwealth Powerlifting and Benchpress Championship at Potchefstroom in South Africa on Wednesday.

Samarendra lifted 165kg in squat (bronze), 130 kg in bench press (silver), 215kg in deadlift (silver) and total of 510 kg to claim the bronze medal in the 66kg weight category powerlifting. The gold and silver medals were bagged by the England lifters.

In the benchpress event Samarendra grabbed the gold medal on Tuesday in 66kg men category. However another Odia lifter Shakti Ranjan Barik won a bronze medal in the benchpress event by lifting 132kg in the 74kg category. He will have the powerlifting event on Thursday.

Both got selected in the 23-member Indian squad on the basis of their performance in the Subrat Classic International Powerlifting Championship held at Jamsedpur from December 26 to 30. Samarendra Routray and Shakti Ranjan Barik bagged overall gold medal each in their respective weight categories.

Earlier in Jamsedpur, Laban Routray and Sandhyarani Patra’s son Samarendra was received six individual gold medals in the 66kg category. He bagged three gold medals each in the junior and senior event by lifting 132 kg in bench-press, 225kg in deadlift and 165 kg in Squat.

Similarly, Odisha Police lifter Shakti was fetched gold in men 74 kg category by lifting 155 kg in bench-press, 250kg deadlift and 217.5 kg in squat. Barik also won first runner up trophy in deadlift and a silver medal in the bench-press. .
